Exactly. That loss in efficiency adds up. You multiply those lost minutes by millions of trucks, and freight delays rack up quickly. And, uh, it even leads to extra fuel burned—drivers end up going an extra 15 miles per day just trying to track down a spot. It’s not great for the environment or anyone’s wallet.

I’ve actually seen this in action back home. Around Essex and the outskirts of London, you’ll see dozens of lories just lined up along A-roads leading into industrial estates. It looks like a motorway lay-by has, I don’t know, spilled into the neighborhoods! And drivers are just trying to grab a quick rest wherever they won’t get hassled. It’s the same in North America, same stories—just different accents.

In the U.S., cargo theft tied to unsecured parking racks up, uh, nearly $700 million a year. There are ripple effects everywhere, even down to turnover—drivers leave jobs because they’re tired of dealing with the constant stress of finding a place to rest.

The state’s just committed $150 million to add 1,400 long-term parking spots across 33 new locations, all on state property. And—get this—they’re touting it as a national safety model.
